Performing Arts

Performing Arts are art forms in which artists use their body, voice, or objects to convey artistic expression. It may include primary forms, such as dance, music, opera, theatre and musical theatre. In Pei Chun, our performing arts groups are Chinese Dance, Chinese Orchestra and Choir.

In performing arts, pupils learn to appreciate music as performers and listeners. They get the opportunity to create something together as a group, thus emphasising on the importance of team work. In addition, pupils learn the value of responsibility and diligence as they have to practice to master their pieces.

The Pei Chun Citizenship Curriculum encompasses the following components: National Education (NE), Values in Action (VIA), and Social Studies. It is anchored on the school Vision, Mission and Values that are aligned to MOEΓÇÖs desired outcomes of education, SEL competencies, 21CC as well as the R3ICH values of respect, responsibility, resilience, integrity, care and harmony.

National Education (NE) Core Events
Every year, the school commemorates four NE Core events: Total Defence Day, International Friendship Day, Racial Harmony Day and National Day, with focus on ΓÇÿCherishing the PastΓÇÖ, ΓÇÿCelebrating the PresentΓÇÖ and ΓÇÿCreating the FutureΓÇÖ.

ΓÇÿCherishing the PastΓÇÖ allows our pupils and staff to understand the importance and significance of these events. ΓÇÿCelebrating the PresentΓÇÖ makes us take stock of how far we have come and indeed celebrate our progress. ΓÇÿCreating the FutureΓÇÖ empowers our pupils and staff on what they can do to ensure that we as a country can continue to make progress and scale a higher level.

Total Defence Day: 15 Feb 2016 (commemorate on 12 Feb 2016)
International Friendship Day: 8 Apr 2016
Racial Harmony Day: 21 Jul 2016 (commemorate on 22 Jul 2016)
National Day: 9 Aug 2016 (celebrate on 8 Aug 2016)

Social Studies (SS)
In line with the Social Studies Curriculum, Learning Journeys / Field-based Learning are designed to meet the needs of the different levels:

P1 and P2: Home and School.
P3 and P4: School and Community.
P5 and P6: Country and the World.

Values-in-Action (ViA)
Values-in-Action is a critical part of Citizenship Education as it strives to build social cohesion and inculcate civic responsibility. Pei Chun approaches the implementation of ViA Programmes by focusing on ΓÇ£3AsΓÇ¥ – Awareness, Action and Advocacy. We design our programmes so that pupils are aware of what is going on at home, in school, within the community, country or in the world. With this awareness and the new skills gained, they are able to take action and eventually encourage their peers to do the same. Over the six years, we provide opportunities for pupils to develop into informed, concerned and participative citizens.

NE, SS and VIA expose our pupils to different experiences as well as provide sufficient platforms and opportunities for them to enact their learning, By focusing on equipping pupils with adequate knowledge, skills and competencies, Citizenship Education is key and critical in the holistic development of our pupils.

The school adopts a structured framework that integrates SAP, CCE, NE, VIA, SEL, CCA and student well-being in the development of values, knowledge, skills and competencies to drive and nurture character and leadership development in our pupils. The school has derived the formula E = A(S + K) to communicate our emphasis on Character and Citizenship education, with E as Holistic Education, A as Attitude, S as Skills and K as Knowledge. When the right attitude is absent, E equals to zero. Hence, the school believes in nurturing the right attitude as the key focus of our Character and Citizenship education.

Form Teacher Guidance Period (FTGP)

FTGP is conducted weekly by form teachers to provide quality teacher-student interactions and develop Social and Emotional (SE) competencies in our pupils. The lessons include the following:

  • SE lessons which focus on topics such as self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, relationship management and responsible decision making;
  • Interaction activities and meaningful play that strengthen pupil-teacher relationships;
  • Cyber Wellness;
  • Education and Career Guidance (ECG);
  • Protection against abuse.

CCE (Mother Tongue)

CCE lessons (好品德 好公民) are conducted by the Chinese Language teachers. The new CCE syllabus is anchored on core values, social and emotional competencies, and skills related to character and citizenship development. CCE lessons are based on the life experiences that our pupils go through, drawing out values and skills appropriate at their developmental stage.

Pupils are guided to apply the core values of respect, responsibility, resilience, integrity, care and harmony; make decisions and act on them in a responsible way.

Assessment for Learning is practised in CCE as it encourages pupils to be responsible for their own learning. Assessment tools such as peer assessment, rubrics, checklists, reflections are used to provide feedback to pupils on their understanding and acquisition of knowledge, skills and values.

Parents are the key navigators of their childrenΓÇÖs growth. ΓÇÿFamily TimeΓÇÖ segment in the CCE lessons allows parent to bond with their children and reinforce what is taught in school. With active Home-School collaboration, we believe that parents will be our most valuable partner in developing the good character of our children.

Values-in-Action Programme

As part of the schoolΓÇÖs Character and Citizenship Education, the Pei ChunΓÇÖs Values in Action (ViA) Programme is specially designed to provide pupils with learning experiences that support their development as socially responsible citizens who can contribute meaningfully to the community. The school has developed a 6-year ViA Curriculum that seeks to develop knowledge, skills and values progressively in each domain from P1 to P6:

  • P1: I Love My Family
  • P2: I Love My School
  • P3: I Love My Environment
  • P4: I Love My Community
  • P5: I Love My Nation
  • P6: I Love My World and Beyond

To ensure meaningful and purposeful learning from the ViA activities, curriculum time will be set aside for pupils to reflect on what they have learnt, how they can continue to make a difference to others, beyond the project. In this way, pupils will continue to apply what they learnt, and be active contributors and concerned citizens.

School Vision

Passionate and Cultured Learners, Proactive and Caring Leaders

Pei Chun Learners and Pei Chun Leaders

Leadership for Self, Leadership for Others
Pei Chun Leadership Philosophy is guided by our school’s vision of nurturing our pupils to be ‘Passionate and Cultured Learners, Proactive and Caring Leaders’. We advocate that leadership is not tagged to a position. Every pupil can be a leader because they do not need a position to lead. Leadership begins with self. Self-leadership begins with being a passionate and cultured learner, striving for excellence in whatever they do and showing exemplary behaviour at all times. It is only when one can lead oneself successfully that one can lead others.
However, leadership is not just about oneself. Leadership is also about making a positive difference to the lives of others. It is about being proactive and caring, taking the initiative to help others in need.
Our Approach to Student Leadership
The school adopts a two-tiered approach with ΓÇÿLeadership for All PupilsΓÇÖ being Tier 1 and ΓÇÿLeadership for Student Leaders SegmentsΓÇÖ as Tier 2.
Tier 1 leadership is achieved via various programmes for all pupils such as our comprehensive CCE and SAP curriculum. Through these programmes, pupils are provided with varied and authentic learning opportunities to develop leadership competencies. Tier 2 leadership is focused on our student leaders where they are developed through a structured leadership curriculum.
